Poland Buying Abrams - Warsaw's recent decision to purchase 250 Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks from the United States will significantly contribute to NATO's deterrence and Poland's security. There are several critical reasons that make this a wise choice.
Today, Russia represents a huge threat to NATO's eastern wing. He modernized his military with a priority on ground forces deployed against Poland and its NATO neighbors. He added several tank and mechanized divisions to his Western Military District and built up forces in Kaliningrad. He gained operational military experience in Syria and Ukraine.

Moscow's aggressive attitude is visible every day, and recently Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the next conflict in the Black Sea will be met with a "harder" response and a large buildup of forces near the Ukrainian border.
Polish Defense Strategy: Big Brother Will Protect Us
Belarus is in turmoil, and NATO's position in the Baltic states is relatively weak. Finland and Sweden remain outside NATO. Poland is therefore a center of strength in the midst of this turmoil. We must remain strong for the benefit of the entire eastern flank of NATO.
The acquisition of the best available tank is necessary to maintain this position of the Polish military force. I drove the original M1 tank decades ago and it was an outstanding weapon.
The advantages of that precursor tank remain: low silhouette, versatile protective armor, speed, mobility, stability and a very accurate fire control system. That tank helped the US easily defeat Iraq in Desert Storm.
But this new version of the Abrams is vastly improved with a new, more capable gun, more lethal ammunition, greater protection against roadside bombs, a remote-controlled machine gun, and improved ammunition data links. It is specially designed to improve the modern Russian tank T-14 Armata.

The Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 is so new to the US inventory that in 2022 Poland will receive the tanks before many US Army units. It makes sense for the US because of Poland's frontline status. It will replace Poland's aging Russian T-72s and PT-91s and give Poland a strong combined tank force of superior American and German tanks.
Poland's strong defense capability is central to NATO's deterrence. Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, NATO has taken several steps to strengthen deterrence.
He began to strengthen his ability to react quickly. He then deployed four battalion-sized NATO battle groups to transfer positions in the Baltic states and Poland. Later, the United States strengthened its own military position in Poland. Finally, the Alliance launched readiness and mobility initiatives that are currently being implemented. The sale of the Abrams tank is part of this broader effort.

This entire structure of NATO's deterrence in Northeast Europe is based on the fact that NATO forces on the front line must be able to hold that line against an initial military attack until reinforcements arrive. Russia has a time and distance advantage over NATO's main reinforcement forces, so the forward-deployed force's mission is not an easy one.
More must be done. Frontline forces can only be the connecting wire to achieve maximum deterrence. That is why the purchase of these Abrams tanks from Poland and their deployment in the east is so important not only for Poland, but also for its NATO neighbors both to the north and to the south. This will help frontline forces to hold that line during the crucial time needed for NATO reinforcements to arrive.
The longer these front-line forces last, the more credible NATO's overall deterrence will be. Thus, the risk of a Russian miscalculation is reduced and Poland is safer.
The United States understands this concept of deterrence. Because of this, with bipartisan support, the United States has command of a NATO battle group in Poland. This is also why Washington has increased its presence in Poland under President Trump, a move supported by President Biden.
Poland Signs Up For Additional 116 M1a1 Abrams Tanks
The presence of the advanced Abrams tank in Poland's arsenal will also strengthen Poland's interoperability with its two most important allies. The United States brings Abrams tanks to every conflict, just as Germany brings Leopard 2 tanks.
Given that both tanks are also in Poland's arsenal, the combined tank forces of these three allies will have significant military synergy. Polish ranges are also suitable for combined tank training, which further improves readiness, interoperability and deterrence.
This sale also has important political dimensions. Washington invested heavily in the defense of Poland. The United States remains the cornerstone of NATO's military capabilities and Poland's security. By purchasing the advanced Abrams, Warsaw recognizes this American commitment to the defense of Poland and designs capabilities to operate more effectively with its major ally.
The Polish investment may be expensive, but it won't break Poland's central defense budget. Warsaw stated that it allocated separate funds for the purchase of these tanks so that other defense elements would not be adversely affected.

In addition, the cost will include a package of logistics items, spare parts and training that will further strengthen the bond between the two armies.
A few years ago I visited a wonderful old military museum in Warsaw. Their tanks were a testimony to the historical importance of ground forces in the defense of Poland. This historical lesson should be remembered as Washington and Warsaw move forward with this arms deal.

The tank survived several attempts to replace it, receiving upgrades such as a larger and more powerful 120mm gun; armor layer with depleted uranium; digital command and control system; and a special "hunter-killer" thermal imaging viewer for the tank commander.

The idea that a 40-year-old tank design has a place in modern armies is relatively new. By comparison, in 1981 the 40-year-old M4 Sherman medium tank was completely obsolete. The basic design of the Abrams, however, was robust enough to accommodate new technologies as engineers developed them.
The latest version of the M1, the M1A2 SEPv3, adds a remote .50 caliber machine gun, improved protection against remote-controlled roadside bombs, and an ammunition data link that allows the tank crew to issue specialized commands to the main round. The 73.6-ton tank has a crew of four and can travel 42 kilometers on the road and 30 kilometers per hour on the ground.
