C Rats Military - This information is for those who have only heard of C-Rations. Those of you who know what they are, tell us your favorite recipes for a delicious treat. I will post them below.

"C" (combat) rations were a staple of American soldiers from World War II to Vietnam. I guess you could call it "original box food".

This is just an example. As you can see, you have (1) the box that your food came in. Then the food is broken. In this case, cantos 2 and 3 could be good food, and cantos 4 and 5 could be desert. In the 6 pack choose 7, 8, 9, 10.12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. You also drink salt, pepper, coffee and 2 fantastic foods to prevent bad breath. I declined #11 because the only thing they didn't provide was toothpaste and a toothbrush. Oh, yes, sometimes you have a tobacco well.

The following were food options. Most of the time, the boxes were upside down, so you couldn't see what you were getting. Most of the time I didn't want to know. Here are your options."

They are also treated to things like: peanut butter and jelly, cheddar cheese, pound cake, crackers, fudge bars, and John Wayne candy.

John Wayne candies and soda crackers. John Wayne candy bars were popular, as were toilet paper and parties. Almost all C rations were terrible unless heated, so heat tabs or C-4 parts were necessary.

Fortunately for most of the service men I called upon, we only had to eat C rations once a day when we were in the field. Others had to endure more torture.

No one has ever died from eating C rations that I know of. We just thought we wanted to.

But they all had a strong point...I never found anything that was rotten if the tin looked good...can't say the same for MRE. Once I opened the bag of beef stew, it smelled like a corpse.

A few years before it was retired (1997) I found a case of C from the Vietnam era lying on a rock. There was almost no cardboard left, only slats stacked on top of each other. Guess what we ate after opening and nobody got sick. The pound cake was delicious as always.
