"A lot of people don't realize how much history we have on record. Most of the historic sites included in the unit are World War II or Cold War military sites," Nutt said. "Not many people think that the building is something that might also be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and has historical significance beyond what it's used for every day."

In places like the World War II mobilization area, individuals are encouraged to come out and take a closer look.

"As for the Second World War site, nine of the 12 buildings are currently open to the public to visit," he said. "The main purpose of this area is to show what life was like at Fort Leonard Wood for a soldier living in these buildings (at the time.)"

Some of the buildings on the grounds, such as the chapel, are still used today for church services, weddings, graduations and other ceremonies.

Building 2101, the Black Officers Club, is currently being renovated. While the building is still en route, the public has a limited opportunity to see the mural painted by Staff Sgt. Samuel Countee, who hung over the fireplace.

"The Countee mural is on temporary display at the John B. Mahaffey Museum. Once the renovations are complete, the mural will return to its rightful place," Lyon said. "It's a great opportunity for the public to see the mural as once it's back there will be restricted access to the building as it will be used as a classroom for soldiers."

Stop 1: Old Post Office. Across from General Leonard Wood Community Hospital on Missouri Avenue. Completed in May 1941 as part of the original post office building, it served until 1989 and was demolished in 2012. Stop 2: Red Cross Building. Next to the old post office. This building was also built in 1941. It housed the Red Cross office for 58 years until 1999, when it was converted into VIP guest quarters and renamed the Ike Skelton House after US Representative Ike Skelton of Missouri. According to the building standard of the World War II Red Cross offices, it was built in the shape of a cross and hosted red shingles to be "distinguished from the air and not shelled in times of war". Stop 4: Soldier's Memorial Chapel. Built in 1962 and located at 450 Iowa Avenue, this chapel was built to meet the needs of installation service members during the early years of the Cold War. This 600-seat chapel is still used for worship by several denominations and is NRHP eligible.

Stop 5: 600 Area Kagerulle Barracks. Located in the West 6th Street area, they were built in the early 1960s. These were some of the first major unaccompanied trainee housing developments after Fort Leonard Wood was designated as a permanent installation in 1956. from the National Register of Historic Places Rolling Pin Barracks qualified Historic District.

Stop 6: Building 2101 - WWII Black Officers Club. (Currently under renovation.) Located on East 4th Street, this building was converted into an officer's club to serve the facility's growing number of black officers. A 1945 painting by Staff Sgt. It was converted into a guest house in 1965 and is eligible for the NRHP along with its stone POW paths, chimney, terrace and barbecue.
